Night Quotes Project

Today in class, you received the Night quotes project. For homework, you should pick a theme, a symbol, and 6 quotes (with quote intros and text notes) that connect to your theme and symbol. Please write all of these elements down on a sheet of binder paper.

If you have not returned your release form for the visit from Voice of Witness, please do so as soon as possible.

Don't forget to go straight to the Little Theater for 5th period!

Various Assignments

1. The final draft of your Armenian Genocide essay is due tomorrow. Please staple it on top of your rough draft. This is a hard deadline.

2. The Maus extra credit test is tomorrow at lunch, in Ms. Scher's room (211). It is multiple choice.

3. If you did not hand in your progress report today, be sure to get it signed and hand it in tomorrow for late credit.

Night and Vocab Test

On October 4^th, you will have a Night test, which will have a section on vocabulary as well.

Chapter Work (20 points each time)

You will do chapter work for Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapters 4-5 (together), Chapters 6-7 (together), and chapter 8-9 (together). That’s a total of 5 chapter work entries, 100 points total.

For each, please do the following.

1. Theme tracking: Throughout Night, there are several themes that Elie touches on again and again. The themes are:
1. Universe of Obligation
2. Faith/Religious Belief
3. Night
4. Treatment of Jews/Dehumanization of Jews

Your job is to keep track of these themes, either using post it notes or a list. Each night, find 2 quotes, and each quote should be on a different theme out of the four listed above. Try to find quotes that clearly and deeply make you think about these themes. Make sure to write the theme on the post it note, so you can use them later for the quotes project! Alternately, you can use different colored post it notes for different themes. As you continue reading, you may want to narrow your search down to quotes related to just two themes, so that you have a lot of quotes on those themes to use in the Quotes Project.

2. Chunks: Each night, pick ONE quote that you’ve post it noted or added to your list. For that quote, write a TS, the quote with a quote intro (your CD) and two CMs about how Elie’s feelings on this particular theme are changing, growing, or deepening.

Sample TS: Due to the horrible circumstances in the concentration camps, Elie begins to lose his belief in Judaism.

Night - chapters 1 & 2

Finish chapter 1 in Night.

Read chapter 2 and complete your chapter work.

You should be putting post-it notes on quotes that relate to the 4 themes (universe of obligation, night, faith / religious belief and dehumanization of Jews).

Choose 1 theme and write 1 chunk about how Elie's feelings about that theme are changing. 20 points.

Quiz Tomorrow

Please study tonight for the quiz you will have tomorrow. The quiz will be on:

2. World War I and the Treaty of Versailles
3. The Rise of the Nazi Party (you should also be able to explain ways that Jews were discriminated in the 1930s)

Why Study the Holocaust?

You have two tasks for tonight:
1. Finish your list of laws that restricted the rights of Jewish people in Germany in the 1930s.
2. Read the article called "Why Study the Holocaust" and write a one paragraph answer to that question. Remember, a paragraph is at least 4-6 sentences.

Rise of Nazi Party storyboard

Today in class, we began our unit on the Holocaust and its legacy.

Based on the Rise of the Nazi Pary timeline that you received in class, please create a 12 frame storyboard. Each frame should include a title, a caption, and an illustration. Pick facts that will help you understand how this party gained power, leading eventually to the rise of Hitler in the 1930s. Use lots of color. 60 points.

Post World War I Geography

Tonight, please complete the handout you were given in class, with the maps of pre-World War I and post World War I. First, highlight the changes (which countries lost land? Which countries were created?). Then, write a list of the new countries. Finally, write a paragraph in which you explain how these changes might have had an impact on Germany and its citizens.

Read & Summarize

Read and summarize the handout on the Alliances and battles. 20 points!

Ms. McEnany's class should also finish the questions that you started in class on Friday.

Rough draft due tomorrow

Please come to class tomorrow with the following:
1. Your rough draft. This should either be typed (12 pt font, double spaced) or handwritten in pen. If you need me to print it out, please bring it in the morning on a flash drive.
2. Your stamped thesis, first body paragraph, second body paragraph, and conclusion.
3. The blue rubric.

Rough Draft

Your complete rought draft is due tomorrow. You should type everything up into 1 complete essay. It should be in paragraph form (don't label the parts), double spaced.

You need to turn in all of the body paragraphs and conclusion homework with your draft.

*If possible, your essay must be typed. If you do not have access to a computer it must be hand written in PEN, skipping lines.

2nd body paragraph and conclusion

1. If you did not finish your second body paragraph in class, you need to finish it tonight. It should address the second part of your thesis, and follow either the 2 chunk or 3 chunk format. Please label each sentence.

2. Write your conclusion. This should be 4-7 sentences, and should answer the question "So what?" Why should the world recognize this as a genocide? Think about how it would help the Armenians and/or the world. Please do not use "I" or "we" or "you".

This weekend, please write a list of 10 strong facts from the Armenian Genocide. These facts should help you prove that what took place in the Ottoman Empire was actually a genocide and not just random acts of violence. These facts will become your Concrete Details in your essay next week.
